What this business is made of
The business
Temu brings the Chinese factory to your doorstep, no middlemen overcharging along the way.
PDD runs two businesses: Pinduoduo, China's most price-aggressive group-buying marketplace, and Temu, its store that ships products straight from the factory to over 70 countries. It makes money charging commissions and ads to the sellers competing to show up. It booked $61.8B in 2025 with a 56% gross margin and $15.3B in free cash flow, without a dollar of debt.
The edge is scale and price: millions of buyers and factories that need each other, and logistics that squeeze costs like no one else. But it's not a deep moat — selling cheap can be copied by anyone with enough capital. Buyer loyalty goes to the price, not the brand.
Revenue history
From $14.7B to $61.8B in 4 years — nearly 4.2x its size. Selling more and more is the base of everything else.
Where each $100 of sales goes
Revenue $61.8B · FY2025
Of every $100 in sales, $77 goes to costs and operations; $23 is left as net profit (23% margin).
Catalysts and risks
Temu keeps opening new markets outside China with double-digit growth.
Generates $15.3B in free cash flow a year, a cushion to fund expansion without debt.
Zero debt and $15.6B in cash: it can withstand a price war that drowns rivals.
Tariffs in the US and Europe and the end of the small-parcel exemption hit Temu's model directly.
VIE structure: you don't own the Chinese company, only contracts that Beijing could void.
The Chinese government changes digital-commerce rules whenever it wants, without warning.
Charlie's note
“It grows fast, owes nothing and spits out real cash, and still trades at 20 times. The discount isn't a gift: Beijing and the tariffs can ruin the party any given Tuesday. That's why you buy with a short hand, not both.”
