You are 52% below the all-time high, and 1% above the low of the cycle. The signal comes from where you sit in that range.

📊

The floor of the cycle is at $81.17; the ceiling, at $171.00. The closer to the floor, the better the spot to build in slowly.

⚠️

It has no intrinsic value from fundamentals — the range comes from price highs and lows. The final call is yours; buying gradually (DCA) means a little at a time.

The business

A simple way to hold long-term U.S. government debt in your portfolio.

TLT is an exchange-traded fund that gathers U.S. Treasury bonds with maturities of 20 years or more into a single basket. Instead of buying those long-term bonds yourself, the fund bundles them together and tracks an index that follows that U.S. government debt.

Its advantage as a vehicle is giving you easy, liquid, and low-cost access to a slice of the market (long Treasury bonds) that would be cumbersome to build on your own. You buy a single position and get a broad basket.

Catalysts and risks

Cycles where interest rates fall tend to favor the price of long bonds.

Structural demand from investors seeking refuge in U.S. government debt during uncertain times.

Flows into this type of fund when investors rebalance their portfolios seeking less exposure to stocks.

⚠️

High sensitivity to interest rates: if rates rise, the price of these long bonds tends to fall sharply.

⚠️

The fund's annual cost (management fee) that slowly reduces your return over time.

⚠️

Concentration in a single theme and a single issuer: long-term U.S. government debt, with no diversification into other assets.

Charlie's note

More than guessing where rates are headed, what matters is understanding why you hold this fund in your portfolio and keeping discipline; with long bonds, cost and your time horizon carry a lot of weight.
