Index ETFs don't have their own calculated Value. They hold hundreds of companies — we work out whether the group is expensive or cheap versus its history.

You are 1% below the all-time high, and 143% above the low of the cycle. The signal comes from where you sit in that range.

📊

The floor of the cycle is at $152.02; the ceiling, at $374.70. The closer to the floor, the better the spot to build in slowly.

⚠️

It has no intrinsic value from fundamentals — the range comes from price highs and lows. The final call is yours; buying gradually (DCA) means a little at a time.

The business

A single basket to own a little piece of nearly the entire U.S. stock market.

VTI is a basket that tracks practically the whole U.S. stock market. Inside it holds thousands of companies, from the biggest ones to small firms, covering every sector of the American economy. It follows a broad index that aims to represent the market as a whole, not just the giants.

Its edge as a vehicle is the huge diversification at a very low annual cost: with a single purchase you get access to thousands of companies, something almost impossible to build on your own without spending a lot.

Catalysts and risks

The long-term growth of the U.S. economy tends to push the overall market up.

The constant inflow of money from savers and investors into broad, low-cost funds.

Innovation and the rise of new companies that over time get added to the index.

⚠️

Geographic concentration: it's all in a single country, so it depends on how the U.S. does.

⚠️

It's cyclical: in market downturns, the fund drops along with everything else.

⚠️

Even though the annual cost is low, it's not zero, and the big companies weigh more, so your result depends heavily on them.

Charlie's note

For a beginner, the discipline of contributing steadily and keeping costs low matters more than trying to guess the best moment to get in or out.
